  Intermediate Cruising Standard
  

  To be able to cruise safely as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 9 to 12 meters, sloop rigged with an inboard engine, in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. The standard emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for extended cruises in coastal and inland waters and for bareboat chartering. This course is conducted on the Glenmore Sailing Club's Catalina 30 at the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club Marina.
  

  This course covers the Performance Objectives within the Intermediate Cruising Standard Depending on each student's ability to competently  and consistently demonstrate these Performance Objectives determines which Standard a student achieves.
  

  PREREQUISITES
  Requirements prior to taking the standard:
  •Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard,
  •Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation or Coastal Navigation Standard,
  •ROC(M): VHF with DSC endorsement,
  •Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (or equivalent)
  •Recognized standard first aid and CPR certificate,
  •Sail Canada Intermediate Coastal Navigation Standard.
  Note: To maximize the likelihood of successfully completing the Intermediate Cruising Standard, a student should:
  a)Have experience as skipper of at least ten day sails (or equivalent),
  b) Be able to consistently use the knowledge and demonstrate the skills learned in the Basic Cruising Standard and
  the Basic Coastal Navigation Standard.

  
  Course Format:

  1. Five hours of ashore theory split into two sessions in Calgary prior to going to the west coast.  (dates to be set - plan for one to three weeks ahead of your course on the coast).
  2. Four 8.5-hour days of sailing and motoring onboard "Summer Ice"
     
  3. Two-hour written test onboard before the end of the last day onboard.

  • This course is held in all weather with moderate wind and sea conditions.
    

  • This is a live aboard program.
  • Students with a consistent and comprehensive demonstration of course Performance Objectives will realize their Intermediate Cruising Standard. Students achieving an Intermediate Cruising Standard will receive a Sail Canada seal and instructor sign off on their course.
  • Students arrange their own transportation to/from Sydney North Saanich Yacht Club and accommodations on Vancouver Island.
  • PFDs are provided for students. If you have a favourite and want to wear it, please bring it along.
  • Instructor Standard (qualifications of instructors for this course).
  • Alberta Sailing Association and Sail Canada Course Levy applied during course registration.

  • The days are full with learning and demonstrating skills. Please ensure you get the rest you need after the first two days of the course.
    

  What to bring:

  • Clothing: Synthetic clothing in layers... base layers and insulation layers. Windbreaker, fleece jackets, rain jacket, rain pants. Avoid cotton where possible.
  • Footwear: Closed toed shoes or flat soled rubber boots with non-marking soles.
  • Other Gear: backpack or duffle bag for your gear onboard;  sunscreen / block; sunglasses with a safety string; lip balm stick; hat with clip or line to tie onto your PFD; water bottle; Buff or neck warmer. OPTIONAL items to bring: camera, watch; anti-nausea (Meclizine, Dramamine, etc) and/or allergy medication (Instructors can not provide any oral medications for students.)
  • Sailing gloves or rubber coated mesh back gloves: For the rubber / mesh gloves consider cutting the fingertips off of the thumb, index and middle fingers leaving your most distal 1.5 finger segments exposed. This protects your hands and still allows for finer work with shackles, chart plotter, etc.

  Keelboat 3 - Keelboat Cruising

  This third sailing education course expands your sailing knowledge through sailing in coastal tidal waters. This course is conducted on the Glenmore Sailing Club's Catalina 30 at the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club Marina. The Club is excited to have a partnership with this Club as we share many educational and membership objectives.
  

  One course, two possible outcomes.

  This course covers the Performance Objectives within the Basic Cruising Standard. Depending on each student's ability to competently  and consistently demonstrate these Performance Objectives determines which Standard a student achieves.
  

  Basic Cruising Standard: Students with a consistent and comprehensive demonstration of course Performance Objectives will realize their Basic Cruising Standard. This is the likely outcome for individuals who have sailed previously (CANSail Dinghy or keelboat)
  

  Basic Crew Standard: Students able to consistently assist a skipper will realize their Basic Crew Standard. This is the likely outcome for individuals who have limited or no previous sailing experience.

  Course prerequisites:

  • Keelboat 2 (Keelboat Skipper).
    
  • The Basic Cruising Skills book is required reading.
