Sound Signalling Starting System

The use of this Starting Sequence by a Race Committee replaces Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 26 and permits changes to Race Signals and the corresponding rules in Part 3. All of RRS 30 is deleted under this system.

  • The Race Committee shall display a class flag at or before the Warning sound.
  • The starting sequence shall consist of the following sound signals made at the indicated times.
  • Start Sequence Timing shall be from the beginning of any individual or group of sound signals.
  • Sound signals shall govern, even if visual signals are also used.
  • Short sound signals are 0.5 second in length
  • Long sound signals are 1.0 second in length
  • When more than one sound makes up a sound signal, the space between individual sounds is 0.5 second.
  • Individual and General Recall flags and sounds remain the same as in the RRS.
  • Failure to hear any hail or sound signal shall not be grounds for redress. This changes RRS 62.1(a).
  • The Class flag will be removed after the Start sound, but it's removal does not indicate that start of the race, the sound signal indicates the start of the race.
